As mentioned, the rectouterine pouch is also known as the rectovaginal pouch or pouch of Douglas. Other names include the rectovaginal pouch, rectouterine cul-de-sac, Douglas space, Douglas cavity & Ehrhardt–Cole recess.
It is a deep extension of the peritoneum between the posterior wall of uterus and the rectum in females.

The rectouterine pouch normally contains a small amount of fluid throughout the menstrual cycle, in particular around the time ovulation. As it is the deepest point of the abdominopelvic cavity in women, it can be susceptible to infection and collection of other fluids.
