Just before 11pm on March 3rd 1996 a resident of the West Side of Charleston, West Virginia contacted the police. The man, David Allan Smith, advised authorities that a young girl who had been staying with him had gone missing and that he was very worried for her safety. The young girl was 15-year-old Chasity Dawn Cottrell.

A short time later Smith lead members of the Charleston Police Dept. on a cursory search of his West Side neighborhood. Behind a dumpster in a rear yard, approximately 200 yards east of Smith's apartment, the nude body of Chasity Dawn Cottrell was found. She had been dead for just over 2 hours. To this day neither the State Medical Examiner nor the Charleston Police Department can say with certainty just how she died.
