Amani (1872-1904) (Russian: Амани, Николай Николаевич ) was one of several 19th and early 20th century composers to have a life blighted by tuberculosis (or 'consumption ' as it was known to English speakers). I can think offhand of Adolf Jensen, Vasily Kalinnikov - and, most famously, Chopin. Amani was born in St. Petersburg, and studied at the conservatory there - his teachers included Liadov and Rimsky-Korsakov. He travelled to Italy for his health in 1901, but his condition worsened there , and he returned to Russia and settled in Yalta in the Crimea, where he eventually died. His output was small and included cantatas, an overture, a string trio (which won a prize from the St. Petersburg Chamber Music Society), and piano music and songs. These preludes were published in 1901, and the first of them was written in Palermo, Sicily during Amani's ill-fated Italian trip. It is a calm, conventional piece, but the funeral march is quite striking, and the must-hear last piece has a New England school transcendentalist feel about it - the sort of thing MacDowell might have written had he studied in Russia.
