The drink that makes the world go round.
Coffee.
Coffee’s story starts in the highlands of Ethiopia. According to legend, a goat herder noticed his goats became unusually energetic after eating bright red berries. Curious, people began experimenting with the plant — and eventually discovered its stimulating effect.
It crossed the Red Sea into Yemen in the 15th century, it was so popular, Sufi mystics used it to stay awake during night prayers.
And from the Yemeni port of Mocha — Al-Makha — coffee was exported to the world. That’s where the word “mocha” comes from.
It reached the Ottoman Empire and in 1555, the first recorded coffeehouses opened in Istanbul, becoming centers of debate, poetry, and politics.
Coffee tasseography — fortune telling through coffee grounds — also became popular and may have started with the sultans harems.
With that being said, as much as I love all the different types of Yemeni, Lebanese, and Turkish coffee…
The best coffee I’ve ever had was in Bali. It’s called kopi luwak — made from beans selected by the civet, an animal that picks the best coffee cherries in season, eats them, digests them, and after they’re collected, the beans are roasted and brewed.
It sounds disgusting.
But it was absolutely delicious.
