UCLA's LGBT Campus Resource Center proudly presents the I Am Bruin Pride Project, a documentary and archival project honoring the words, stories, and contributions of LGBT students, faculty, staff and alumni of UCLA.
Jaemmie Cañas, class of 2016, is a survivor through and through. Jaemmie has faced incredible hardship and still wakes up every day ready to give back to the community. I Am Bruin Pride is proud to feature Jaemmie Cañas as our 15th interviewee.
Jaemmie Cañas is earning a B.A. in Anthropology and a minor in Disability Studies. Jaemmie has been an Academic Peer Counselor at the Academic Advancement Program, but is currently a UCLA Law Fellow, an Undergraduate Intern at the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs office and works at the UCLA School of Law. Jaemmie will be applying to law school with an interest in family law.
Jaemmie has focused on psychological anthropology and hopes to contribute another perspective about the concept of suffering. Jaemmie’s passion and interest in the issues of homelessness, LGBTQ youth, foster youth and the concept of suffering began after Jaemmie emancipated from the Department of Children Services at the age of 19. Jaemmie, like many LGBTQ youth, ran away from home at the age of 12 to get away from a dysfunctional environment. Struggles and challenges have ranged from sexuality and identity issues, to now an invisible physical & neurological disability due to a motorcycle accident 2 years ago. However, without the help of many, Jaemmie knows they wouldn’t be here today therefore Jaemmie is inspired and motivated by everyone in their life to continue the legacy of inspiration and motivation. Jaemmie has maintained communication with their ex-social worker and is currently working on opening an organization for homeless, LGBTQ, disabled, and/or any youth that has experienced any psychological trauma by 2020. Jaemmie was accepted into the CAPPP (Center for American Politics and Public Policy) Fall program in Washington, D.C. where Jaemmie will be conducting research on undifferentiated out-of-home care institutions for youth versus LGBTQ homes in our nation to demonstrate why Jaemmie’s organization is needed. Jaemmie’s motto is “I am the combined effort of everybody I have ever known”-C.P. and Jaemmie hopes to continue that legacy.
