A popular tourist attraction is back on track in Jim Thorpe, but not everyone is all aboard with its return.
The Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway returned with much fanfare on Friday. Hundreds of people poured into town to see the locomotive roll through.
“I’m just so sad it ever closed down,” said Joe Heaney, who drove an hour and a half from Williamstown to ride the rail.
“Something like this is historic, it should stay open just for old time’s sake.”
The railway shut down to a dispute over taxes with the borough. Council leadership claimed the railway owed $100,000 in back amusement taxes – but the railway said that’s not true, and they wouldn’t pay.
While details of the resolution weren’t made clear, some agreement was made to reopen the train.
