"So what we are doing here with thousands of motorcycles is demonstrating and calling on the government to recognize that there are far more good people among us, and restrictive measures like prohibiting two people on a motorcycle or requiring vests for such a large group cannot be imposed. Moreover, we have a significant economic impact on the city. There are over 1,000,000 motorcyclists in Lima, and almost 60% of them work in delivery services, pharmacies, laboratories, etc."

STORYLINE:
Motorcyclists roared through Peru's capital on Saturday in protest against new rules aimed at reducing crime.
The measures introduced by the government prohibit motorcyclists from carrying passengers.
Bikers are also banned from wearing helmet accessories that obstruct facial visibility and are required to wear vests displaying their vehicle’s license plate number.
Motorcyclists who fail to comply with the new regulations face fines.
Officials say the measures are necessary because of rising violence, thefts, and assaults committed by people using motorcycles.
An initial set of similar measures was introduced in March, when the government declared another state of emergency after two people were fatally shot on a bus.
One group of motorcyclists has filed a lawsuit challenging the new rules, arguing that they are unconstitutional and unfairly criminalize bikers.
The new restrictions do not apply to police, military personnel, municipal workers, or firefighters.
