More than 70 people are dead after violence broke out on the streets of Mexico in response to the killing of cartel leader El Mencho by the Mexican military. Both the Mexican and US governments had been tracking the drug kingpin for years with multiple warrants out for his arrest. Schools have been forced to close and people are being warned to stay inside as violent stand-offs between the Mexican national guard and cartel members rock the country. Dr. Irene Mia from the International Institute for Strategic Studies tells The World El Mencho was controlling the "most powerful organised crime group in Mexico and arguably in Latin America."
