Iran's retaliation likely to be more serious if the US attacks, says strategist | The Business

Описание: The US stock market has showed it's in no mood for renewed risk. Rising tensions with Tehran aren't helping investors' nerves, as the US builds one of its biggest military deployments in the region.
Chief market strategist for Lazard's financial advisory and asset management business, Ronald Temple joined The Business while in Sydney from the United States.
He says Lazard thinks it's highly likely the US will attack Iran in the next few weeks, and there's a probability of Tehran retaliating in a more serious way than they did the last time the US attacked Iran.
"Last year it was all symbolic. They fired missiles at a US military base in Qatar, but they warned the US before they fired them," he says. "This year, we think they will genuinely retaliate, and that there's a much higher risk that they might impair the flow of crude oil and LNG through the Strait of Hormuz."
The Strait of Hormuz is crucial for global oil supply. Roughly 20 per cent of the world's oil consumption — 20 million barrels per day — and 25 per cent of global liquefied natural gas trade flows through there every day.
"That could be a very meaningful mover for markets," Mr Temple tells The Business.
He also discusses US President Donald Trump's threats to America's trading partners to stick to the deals they have in place, or face much higher tariffs, a delicate relationship between the US and China ahead of President Trump's visit to Beijing, as well as the heat of earnings seasons where AI jitters continue to rattle software stocks.
