It seems apt to anchor this playlist with Psalm 30. Here David gives exuberant praise and thanks to God for His mercy and help, which turn his weeping into joy and mourning into dancing. David's gratitude and joy are deep-seated, not superficial froth bubbling from happy circumstances. His joy is in God Himself, whose face and fellowship he seeks. David acknowledges his sins and tendency to forget God in times of prosperity if he turns prideful. David is deeply grateful to God for lifting His anger and hand of correction once His purpose is served, and for restoring everlasting joy promptly ("in the morning"). David concludes the psalm with a pledge to "give thanks to God forever". The psalmist is thus pointing to God's ultimate blessing of eternal life and eternal worship. Since this promise is even clearer to us as New Testament Christians, we have all the more reason to celebrate and give thanks to God!

Stanza 1
I will extol you, O LORD;
for you have lifted me,
and have not made my foes
to rejoice over me.
O LORD my God, I cried to you,
and you have healed me.
O LORD, you have brought up
my soul from the grave:
you have kept me alive,
that I should not go down to the pit.
O sing to the LORD,
O you saints of his,
and give thanks at the remembrance
of His holiness.
For his anger endures but a moment;
in his favour is life:
Chorus
Weeping may endure for a night,
but joy comes in the morning.
Joy comes in the morning.
You have turned for me
my mourning into dancing:
you have put off my sackcloth,
and girded me with gladness;
that my glory may sing praise to you,
and not be silent.
O LORD my God,
I will give thanks to you forever.
Stanza 2
In prosperity I said,
I shall never be moved.
LORD, by your favour
you made my mountain stand strong.
When you, O my LORD,
did hide your face,
and I was troubled,
I cried to you, O LORD,
and to you my LORD
I made supplication.
What profit is there in my blood?
O when I go down to the pit,
shall dust praise you?
O LORD, shall it declare your truth?
Hear O LORD, have mercy on me:
LORD, be my helper.
Chorus
