I’ve been in a bit of a gaming rut lately, so I decided to revisit the horror games that first pulled me into the genre: Chilla’s Art. These indie titles definitely have their flaws, but the atmosphere and sincerity they bring more than make up for it. Even though I’m no longer a weeb or especially into Japanese culture, there’s something about these games that still resonates—they offer a unique cultural lens that feels genuine.

What I appreciate most is how they reflect what I believe horror games should be: short and atmospheric. Horror loses its punch when it drags on, but when it’s brief and immersive, it leaves a lasting impression. These aren’t my favorite Chilla’s Art games, and I won’t pretend they’re all hits—honestly, most are misses—but they were my gateway into this weird little niche of horror, and for that, they matter.
