STORYLINE
Japan and Indonesia signed a joint statement on a free trade deal in Tokyo on Tuesday, that promises to reduce Indonesian tariffs on Japanese cars and auto parts and allow Indonesian nurses and care workers to work in Japan.
The signing symbolised an agreement on the basic terms of a free trade pact, which will be formalised during further talks at a later date.
Under the agreement Tokyo will remove tariffs on nearly all Indonesian industrial and forestry imports, and slash Jakarta's duties for some Japanese steel exports and all electronics products, officials said.
Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe and Indonesian President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono sealed the deal with an official signing in Tokyo on Tuesday.
Abe called the summit a "very good opportunity for both Japan and Indonesia," and said the pact indicated a further strengthening of "an already striving partnership."
Yudhoyono, during his four day visit to Japan which began Sunday, invited Abe to Indonesia to discuss further developments in the partnership and continue "efforts towards a final deal into next year."
"I believe this summit has brought the two countries closer and it will result in the development for our countries and our people," Yudhoyono said.
The two leaders gave no solid indication of when they expect to formalise the trade pact.
Tokyo and Jakarta began free trade talks in July 2005.
Government officials who briefed reporters on Monday said under the agreement Indonesian tariffs on cars and car parts would be removed gradually.
Tariffs on Japanese steel to be used for specific products - the type that will not compete against Indonesian products - would be removed immediately, while tariffs on electronic products would be removed by 2010.
Duties on Japanese fruit exports such as apples and grapes would be removed immediately.
For Indonesian exports, Japan would cut tariffs on nearly all industrial and forestry products, while those on tropical fruits would be removed gradually.
So-called "sensitive" products such as rice, wheat and meat, are not included in the pact.
Japan is Indonesia's largest trade partner for both exports and imports.
