Sky News host Peta Credlin says the prime minister has the "biggest megaphone in the country" but he has proven to be quite impotent in the face of the growing power of the premiers.
The border closures have become a growing wedge between the state and federal governments, highlighting the lack of policy cohesion between the states within the National Cabinet.
Ms Credlin said the prime minister and all federal ministers whose portfolios have been affected by the pandemic must be "taking every level of government to task".
"In some occasions, very often, we need leaders to contest things," she said.
"We need people to stand up to Daniel Andrews, nobody's standing up to Daniel Andrews.
"For too long he's had absolute carte blanche in Victoria."
