History and Present of Old Ochota (Stara Ochota), Warsaw
(Turn on Subtitles/CC to read details about this place while watching the video. They start at 1:30 and update every 15 seconds)
1. Beginnings and Early Development
Old Ochota (Stara Ochota) is a traditional neighborhood within the Ochota district of Warsaw, located in the central west part of the city. Its roots lie in residential development, growing around historical infrastructure such as the Filtry Lindleya, 19th century water filtration facilities built by British engineer William Lindley.
2. Interwar Period
During the interwar years, the area saw the emergence of charming, green residential estates, especially around streets like Filtrowa, Dantyszka, and Langiewicza. These were primarily family houses built in the 1920s and remain characteristic of the neighborhood.
3. WWII and Wartime History
In 1939, Ochota, including Stara Ochota, was a key sector in the defense of Warsaw. Polish forces repelled a German tank assault on 8–9 September, marking one of the city’s most significant early successes during the September Campaign. Later, during the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, the wider Ochota district experienced a brutal wave of Nazi perpetrated atrocities, including mass murder, looting, arson, and rape, resulting in the deaths of approximately 10,000 civilians and extensive destruction.
4. Postwar Period and Reconstruction
After WWII, many pre war residents returned to Stara Ochota, making it one of the rare Warsaw neighborhoods to retain or regain much of its pre war character.
5. Recent Developments and Urban Changes
The neighborhood today blends its historic feel with modern elements. The Five Sisters Park, also known as Western Park, opened in October 2020. Located at the intersection of Aleje Jerozolimskie and Bitwy Warszawskiej 1920 roku Street, it spans around 8 hectares and commemorates Wanda Posselt and her sisters. Och Teatr, a performing arts theater founded in 2010 by Krystyna Janda’s Foundation for Culture, occupies the site of a former cinema established in 1949 and hosts both main stage and café performances.
6. Today – Character and Cultural Highlights
Stara Ochota remains a peaceful, green, and architecturally charming neighborhood, combining interwar era residential streets, community spaces such as parks and theaters, and historical resonance that gives it a distinct, local resident appeal.
7. Recognition and Location
Stara Ochota is formally one of the neighborhoods within Warsaw’s Ochota district, which is one of the 18 central districts of the city. The Filtry area, an adjacent part of Ochota, is named after William Lindley’s water filtration plant, the oldest infrastructure in the neighborhood. Key contemporary landmarks include the Five Sisters Park, Och Teatr, and the surrounding visual character defined by early 20th century residential architecture and gardens.
