History and Present of the Palace of the Commonwealth in Warsaw
(Turn on Subtitles/CC to read details about this place while watching the video. They start at 1:30 and update every 15 seconds)
1. Foundations and Early Years (1677–1765)
The Krasiński Palace, also known as Pałac Rzeczypospolitej, is a Baroque residence constructed between 1677 and 1695 for Jan Dobrogost Krasiński, the Voivode of Płock. Designed by architect Tylman van Gameren, it was intended to rival the grandeur of Wilanów Palace. The palace features a symmetrical layout with a central courtyard and is adorned with sculptural decorations by Andreas Schlütter and frescoes by Michelangelo Palloni.
2. Transition to State Ownership (1765–1795)
In 1765, the Polish State acquired the palace, repurposing it as the seat of the Crown Treasury Commission. Architect Jakub Fontana oversaw significant interior renovations between 1766 and 1776, enhancing the palace's architectural features. The adjacent Krasiński Gardens were opened to the public in 1766, offering a serene green space in the heart of Warsaw.
3. 19th Century and Russian Rule (1795–1918)
Following the partitions of Poland, the palace's significance waned under Russian control. It served various administrative purposes, including housing judicial institutions during the Duchy of Warsaw and later under Russian rule. The building underwent alterations to accommodate its new functions, though much of its original grandeur was diminished during this period.
4. Interwar Period and World War II (1918–1945)
In the interwar years, the palace became the seat of the Supreme Court of Poland. However, during the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, it was heavily damaged by German forces. The structure was partially demolished, leaving only the outer shell intact. The surviving portions were later incorporated into the reconstruction efforts.
5. Postwar Reconstruction and National Library (1948–2008)
Reconstruction of the palace commenced in 1948 and continued until 1961. The building was repurposed to house the most valuable collections of the National Library of Poland that survived the war. These collections included manuscripts, old prints, and other significant cultural artifacts, solidifying the palace's role as a custodian of Polish heritage.
6. Revitalization and Public Access (2008–2024)
Between 2014 and 2016, the palace underwent extensive revitalization to restore its historical integrity and modernize its facilities. On May 21, 2024, the palace opened its doors to the public for the first time in its history. The National Library's permanent exhibition now showcases priceless objects, including medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, works by Polish literary giants such as Jan Kochanowski, Adam Mickiewicz, and Frédéric Chopin, as well as European thinkers like Gallus Anonymus and Wincenty Kadłubek.
7. Today
Today, Pałac Rzeczypospolitej stands as a testament to Poland's rich cultural and architectural heritage. It serves as a cultural hub, offering free admission six days a week (excluding Tuesdays) to visitors eager to explore its historical and literary treasures. The palace's blend of Baroque architecture and modern exhibitions provides a unique glimpse into Poland's past and its enduring legacy.
