(11 Sep 2007) HEADLINE: Weighing the risks of diabetes drugs
CAPTION: New analysis show the widely used diabetes pill Actos appears to lower a patient's chances of death, heart attack or stroke, unlike its beleaguered chief rival Avandia. But the study also indicates both drugs carry a risk of nonfatal heart failure.(Sept. 11)
[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE]
(THEODORE HALL:) 00:11:00 I take this here to keep the sugar level down after I take the insulin
THEODORE HALL TAKES 13 PILLS EVERY DAY OF HIS LIFE....IT'S THE ONLY WAY HE CAN KEEP HIS TYPE TWO DIABETES IN CHECK
(THEODORE HALL:) 00:04:15 i usually get up in the morning before i have breakfast i take the medicine prescribed for me that day
BUTT
(THEODORE HALL:) 0:02:25 it's something i learn to deal with
(MICHELLE MAGEE:) 00:28:05 i think it's really hard for people who don't have diabetes or diabetes and heart disease to see how of an imposition it is on your lifestyle
MICHELLE MAGEE IS THE DIRECTOR OF THE MEDSTAR DIABETES INSTITUTE IN WASHINGTON D-C....AFTER RECENT CONCERNS OVER PRESCRIPTION DIABETES MEDICATIONS AVANDIA AND ACTOS....MAGEE IS HOPING SOME NEW RESEARCH WILL GIVE DIABETES PATIENTS SOME DEGREE OF HOPE...
(MICHELLE MAGEE:) 00:13:27 we're very interested in medications that can help treat diabetes and heart disease which helps prevent heart attacks and strokes essentially which is what patients with diabetes die from
A NEW STUDY OUT OF THE JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION INDICATES THAT ACTOS, BUT NOT AVANDIA, MAY ACTUALLY LOWER THE RISK OF STROKE, HEART ATTACK AND EVEN DEATH....THE NEW STUDY COMES JUST AROUND A MONTH AFTER THE FDA BLACK LABELLED BOTH DRUGS FOR RISK OF HEART FAILURE AMONGST DIABETIC PATIENTS
IN A STATEMENT RELEASED TODAY THE FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION COMMENTS
" FDA WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE SAFETY PROFILE OF THESE DRUGS AND WE WILL PROVIDE UPDATES ON THIS ISSUE AS THEY BECOME AVAILABLE."
(MICHELLE MAGEE:) 00:16:37 this data is looks promising for pyrsoglydesol which is actos
(STANDUP) the results are promising for the 18 to 20 millions patients suffering from type two diabetes....the study is the largest study ever done on the drug actos....around 16 thousand people were studied and they saw an 18 percent decrease in death heart attack and stroke....but doctors like doctor magee say it's always a good idea to consult your doctor before prescribing any medication
00:16:50 PATIENTS ALWAYS SHOULD CONSULT THEIR DOCTOR WHEN THEY'RE WORRYING ABOUT THESE ISSUES
AND THAT'S JUST WHAT PATIENTS LIKE THEODORE HALL PLAN TO DO
00:08:52 what i'm living with is something I gotta live with for as long as live but I got to do whatever is necessary to keep it under control
