Turn your SWAY into a powerful SHIFT for more club head speed!
What is swaying? Swaying in a golf swing is an excessive lateral movement of the upper and/or lower body during the backswing or downswing.
During the backswing, swaying often happens when the hips or shoulders move laterally away from the target either too much or for too long instead of rotating. This leads to their mass shifting too far onto the trail foot, which makes it challenging to properly transition back toward the target during transition. On the downswing, swaying continues as the golfer’s body slides toward the target for too long rather than rotating.
The difference between shifting and swaying is timing.
Golfers need to shift their weight, or mass, to their trail leg during the backswing to generate power, and set up a proper downswing. This movement engages the hips and torso, promoting a stable and controlled pivot while maintaining balance. Proper weight shift also helps create the necessary momentum for an efficient transfer back to the lead foot, resulting in a powerful and accurate strike. Without a proper weight shift, golfers risk losing distance, consistency, and overall swing efficiency.
What does a good shift look like? You can see the golfers first move is the torso shifting laterally to the trail leg. This lateral motion usually stops about the time the club gets parallel to the ground. The golfer confines to swing the club up and when the lead arm gets parallel to the ground the golfers torso begins to recenter back toward the trail leg. This lateral motion of the torso continues until about the time the lead arm returns to parallel with the ground on the downswing.
Swaying negatively impacts swing mechanics by inhibiting rotation, disrupting timing, and causing erratic weight transfer. It often results in poor ball-striking, such as fat or thin shots, and a loss of distance. To learn shifting and avoid swaying, golfers should learn the timing of the step drill and what that feels like when they aren’t moving their feet.
