HOT WORK
Hot work, such as welding, cutting, brazing, grinding, or any activity that generates sparks or heat, poses a serious fire risk to workers and the facility if proper safety precautions are not taken. OSHA-mandated precautions may include physical guards, venting and purging vessels or piping, fire extinguishers, a fire watch, and a written permit.
Between 2017-2021, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 3,396 hot work-related fires annually, resulting in 19 deaths and 120 injuries on average, according to the NFPA. Additionally, over 500,000 workers are injured in welding accidents each year.
