According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 52 fatal falls to a lower level from scaffolds in 2020 (the latest full-year data available). Specific requirements for scaffold design, inspection, and employee training are addressed in detail in the OSHA standards.
Scaffolds are used extensively in many construction projects, but also in general industry environments. Scaffolds are broadly defined by OSHA as “any temporary elevated platform (supported or suspended) and its supporting structure (including points of anchorage), used for supporting employees or materials or both”, so some employers may not even realize they are using a scaffold.
