On June 15, 1991, after 500 years of being inactive, Mount Pinatubo in Zambales exploded in a cataclysmic eruption that ejected more than one cubic mile of material. Fine ash fell as far away as the Indian Ocean, and satellites tracked the ash cloud several times around the globe. It was the second-largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century, and by far the largest explosion to affect a densely populated area that left more than 200,000 people homeless and claimed more than 700 lives.
The impacts of the eruption continue to this day yet in a surprisingly positive manner.
The shoreline of San Felipe and its neighboring towns have become an unanticipated beneficiaries of the detrimental wrath unleashed by the volcano. Sandbars rose out of the tons of lahar, creating new beaches and extended the coastline to about 100 meters and continuously expands to the rate of 20 meters a year. Truly a world in its own when it comes to tropical paradises.
Liwliwa Beach in San Felipe is easily accessible from Manila making it one the best destinations for anyone who just wants to recharge and find a quiet spot in the vast shoreline. During the rainy season, you can delight yourself with powerful waves perfect for surfing. On the top of everything else, it is endowed with eco-resorts that fosters sustainability and green living practices.
