Section 15: Ridsdale to Bellingham
We start from the hamlet of Ridsdale that sits on the A68. This remote rural location was once a beehive of heavy industry with quarrying, mining, and 3 blast furnaces. We visit the remains of the engine house that provided the power for the blast furnace bellows and today is often mistaken as a castle.
From the old engine house, the right of way cuts through someone's garden as we head to a 'secret' part of Northumberland, Robin of Risingham. This was the location of a once 4ft high rock carving of the Roman God Silvanus of which only the legs remain today and a smaller replica of the original carving.
We briefly rejoin the A68 near West Woodburn Station before cutting through another person's garden to visit the old Roman fort of Habitancum. From here, we headed to the Bay Horse Inn in West Woodburn for lunch before heading to Low Cleughs Bastle. We encountered a number of problems with this right of way (a tied up gate, marshland, and a double barbed wire fence + stonewall blocking the right of way plus a charging young bull). It would be easier to just follow the road.
Dropping down to Low Leam Farm we deviated slightly from the right of way because of cows with calves blocking it. On the far side of the farm is a more established track and we used that to pick up the right of way once more. This was a long slog up hill but with some stunning views if you turn around to admire them.
We briefly pick up the Sandstone Way but do not follow it. Instead we leave the right of way and use the public access land to follow the stone wall upwards and then to the left until we reach a small gate in the wall. Through this gate leads to the start of Callerhues Crag. There are no paths here and it requires knee high heather bashing. Be careful as there are numerous deep holes hidden by the heather and ferns. As we came off the crag we encountered an adder as we made our way to the Pennine Way. It is then just a case of following the PW to Bellingham.
