Section 12: Chollerford to Wark
This walk rapidly became my favourite section so far. Previously that accolade went to Allendale to Bardon Mill which is an awesome walk... but perhaps it was the blue skies and warm weather, the spring lambs, the history, or the wide vistas on Ravensheugh Crags... or just the combination of all these things that created one of the most enjoyable walks I've done so far.
A lot of the historic properties on this walk are in private ownership and I feared that meant the walk would have distracted from the section but the scenery more than made up for the loss of getting close up and interactive with the places.
Simonburn is one of my favourite places in Northumberland. In my late teens when stressed out, full of anger, or depressed, I would take off in my clapped out Ford Fiesta and just sit here and wonder why such a small hamlet had such an impressively large and old church. I am still trying to figure that one out. Obviously the current church was for the large parish, but why did the Anglo-Saxons build specifically here. I believe the well, possibly the nearby waterfall, and the minerals found at this site (yellow and black ochre, and supposedly the only deposit of chalk in Northumberland [since quarried out]) made it a magical place for our pre-Christian ancestors. (see: • Look What I Found... ).
The ruined 'castle', a former four level peel tower and later a folly, gave a lot more than anticipated with the 'secret' vaulted room hidden underneath the rubble of stones. This room would've been used for storing animals and the chute I examined probably provided light into the room.
The crags were not as big or as impressive as Queen's Crags (see: • Queen's & King's Crags - Northumberland ) but the 360 degree views made them really special. They formed the highlight of the walk.
