Interstate ‘76 - Episode 03 - Dust, Deception, and the Devil’s Road

Taurus tried to play me today. Didn’t say much, just gave me that look — the kind that means trouble’s already waiting down the road. I should’ve known better than to trust a quiet morning in the garage.

Skeeter had the Pirana humming like a Sunday sermon, every bolt tightened, every ounce of power ready to run wild. We were talking engines and upgrades, passing time like we always do, when Taurus rolled in and told me to take a drive. No plan. No explanation. Just asphalt ahead and questions behind.

We rode out along the I385, the sun beating down on the hood, until the blacktop gave way to dirt and dust. That’s when he led me out to some forgotten watermill — the kind of place where trouble feels right at home. Then he dropped it on me. Race day.

I didn’t hesitate. When Taurus said go, I slammed the pedal and let the Pirana loose. Left him choking on dust before he could even think about catching up. But it didn’t take long to figure out something wasn’t adding up. First jump came out of nowhere — no warning, no heads up. Just sky where road should’ve been.

After that, it was one jump after another, like the road itself was trying to throw me off. But I held steady. Kept her straight. Flew clean. By the time I crossed the finish, Taurus was nowhere in sight. That’s when it hit me — I wasn’t racing him. I was being tested.

Before I could sit with that thought, Skeeter’s voice cracked through the radio. Trouble in Levelland. A gang rolling in fast, aiming for the school bus. Taurus didn’t ask — he ordered. Intercept. Alone.

So I ran.

Caught the first car and put it down hard. Tried raising Taurus, but wouldn’t you know it — radio “problems.” Real convenient. The rest came at me mean and fast, but I handled it. Took hits along the way too. Pirana’s gonna need more than a polish after this one.

Still… job’s done.

Bus is safe. Kids made it home.

But something about today don’t sit right. Taurus knew more than he let on. And out here, secrets have a way of catching up with you.

Road’s quiet tonight.

But I wouldn’t count on it staying that way.
