Skeeter isn’t the brightest person I’ve ever met — at least not when it comes to people. Cars, though? That’s another story. When it comes to engines, armor, and keeping the Skeeter ain’t much for reading people, truth be told, he couldn’t spot a lie if it was painted bright on a billboard. But give that man a wrench, a busted engine, or a heap of scrap metal, and he’ll turn it into something that hums like it’s got a soul. The Pirana was living proof of that. Sitting there on the roadside, engine idling smooth and steady, it felt less like a machine and more like a partner that knew the road as well as I did. We were tuned up, locked in, and waiting, not for trouble, but for a reason to go looking for it.
The radio was our only lead. Static mostly. The kind of chatter that fills the air when nobody’s saying anything worth hearing. Gangs talking loud, trying to sound bigger than they are. Empty threats drifting across Texas like dust in the wind. We’d been sitting in it for a while when something finally cut through clean enough to matter.
Bar-D. Playboy.
That was it. Two words. But sometimes that’s all it takes.
Taurus changed the moment he heard it. Like someone flipped a switch deep inside him. His voice sharpened, his whole posture tightened, and suddenly there was direction where before there’d only been waiting. I didn’t ask questions, didn’t need to. You spend enough time on the road, you learn when something’s personal.
Whatever Bar-D is, it’s got hooks in Taurus that run deep. The kind that don’t let go easy. You could hear it in the way he spoke, short and focused, like he’d already mapped out the ending in his head. This wasn’t just another job to him. This was unfinished business calling him back.
The route sounded simple enough when he laid it out. Take the I-114, cross two bridges, and keep moving. No detours, no second guessing. But roads like that don’t stay simple for long. Not out here. Those bridges stood out right away, stretching narrow and exposed across open ground, the kind of terrain that begs for an ambush. Anyone with half a brain and a mean streak would see the opportunity.
I kept the Pirana steady as we rolled out, engine low and ready, tires gripping the asphalt like they knew what was coming. The first bridge crept up on us, quiet in a way that didn’t feel right. Too still. Too open. I scanned every inch of it, every shadow, every railing, waiting for something to move.
Nothing did.
But that didn’t mean we were alone.
I pushed through without slowing, keeping the speed high enough to make it hard for anyone to line up a clean shot. The kind of driving where you trust your instincts more than your eyes. When we cleared it, I didn’t relax. Roads like this don’t give warnings twice.
The second bridge came into view not long after, and if the first one felt wrong, this one felt worse. The air itself seemed heavier, like it was holding its breath. Taurus hadn’t said a word in a while, and that silence carried more weight than anything he could’ve told me. Men like him don’t go quiet unless they’re already committed to whatever comes next.
I kept driving.
Because out here, hesitation gets you buried.
Every mile pulled us closer to Bar-D, and the closer we got, the more it felt like the road was tightening around us. No turning back now. Whatever waited at the end of I-114, we were going to meet it head on.
The Pirana was ready for that kind of work. Guns loaded, armor holding strong, engine pushing like it had something to prove. I could feel it under me, every vibration running through the frame, every shift in the road translating straight into motion. It wasn’t just about getting there anymore. It was about how hard we were going to hit when we did.
Taurus finally had a lead, and I could tell he wasn’t about to let it slip away. Not this time. Not after whatever history he’s got tangled up with that name. Revenge has a way of sharpening a man, turning hesitation into certainty.
The highway stretched on ahead, long and unforgiving, with dust rising in the distance like a signal fire. Somewhere out there was Bar-D, sitting quiet for now, unaware that its time was running out.
And when we reached it, there wouldn’t be any questions left.
Just smoke, fire, and the sound of something finally settling a score.
