I Took Apart My Classic Mini Gearbox… Was It a Mistake?!

Описание: In this episode on Classic Mini Workshop, I continue the strip-down and inspection of my Classic Mini gearbox as we edge closer to a full rebuild.

Following the excellent step-by-step guide from Thomas Classic and Modern (huge thanks to Ross for the detailed videos!) and with parts advice from Paul Jefferies at Classic Mini Garage, I start properly cleaning, inspecting and assessing the internals to see what can be reused and what needs replacing.

Thoroughly degreasing and pressure washing the gearbox casings

Steam-cleaning using near-boiling water for a deep clean

Inspecting the selector mechanism and rod change assembly

Checking the lay gear, lay shaft and thrust washers

Inspecting synchros, baulk rings and gear teeth

Measuring clearance with feeler gauges

Assessing 1st & 2nd selector fork wear (and deciding it may need replacing)

Comparing parts with a spare gearbox to confirm wear

Thankfully, there were no major horror stories inside this gearbox — which is reassuring! Most components look in good condition, but while it’s apart it makes sense to refresh wear items properly. I’m currently waiting on parts (including bearings, springs, balls and a new lay shaft), and once they arrive we’ll begin the proper rebuild.

I was a bit nervous going into this, but now I’ve got my head around the gear cluster layout it’s far less intimidating. If you’re tackling a Mini gearbox yourself, I’d highly recommend having a schematic to hand and watching a trusted guide alongside your work.
