In this episode of our 5-week self-drive safari through South Africa’s Kruger National Park, we slow things down — and let the rhythm of summer lead the way.

After a restless night of storms and late work, we begin the day with one of the most stunning sunrises of the trip. Despite feeling physically and mentally tired, we head out on a quiet morning drive and are greeted by a series of memorable sightings: elephants with a calf, buffalos on the road, giraffes, and a marabou stork — one of the so-called Ugly Five. We also take a moment to talk about the meaning behind the Big Five and reflect on what these terms really represent.

Midway through the day, we decide to skip the afternoon game drive and take a break — a reminder that even during incredible journeys, it’s okay to pause. From our shaded campsite in Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp, we continue observing wildlife: ground squirrels, crested barbets, go-away birds, and even elephants walking past the fence at sunset.

The next morning, the S25 route offers a fresh start: zebras in golden light, waterbuck near the riverbeds, impalas sparring, a hippo on land, warthog piglets, and wildebeest with their calves. We also talk about the impact of summer conditions — including sudden road closures, natural fires from lightning strikes, and how the rainy season transforms both the landscape and the pace of the safari.

This episode is a reflection of the slower, quieter side of safari — full of small details, honest moments, and space to breathe.
