Main Sermon Summary
The message explores the true meaning and power of God’s blessing, showing that it’s far more than a polite phrase after someone sneezes.
1. Origin of “God Bless You”
The tradition began around 590 AD, during the bubonic plague in Rome. Pope Gregory I encouraged people to say “God bless you” when someone sneezed — since sneezing was seen as an early sign of infection — to invoke divine protection and healing.
2. What It Really Means
To say “God bless you” is to:
Invoke divine favor, protection, health, and prosperity.
Call upon God to safeguard someone from harm and evil.
It’s not a casual phrase but a declaration of God’s goodness.
3. The Power of Blessing
Proverbs 10:22: “The blessing of the Lord makes rich and adds no sorrow.”
This “richness” refers to every area of life — not just money.
Blessing empowers us to prosper, heal, and overcome challenges.
Whatever is needed at the time, the blessing can manifest as that.
4. The Origin of Blessing
Genesis 1:28: God blessed Adam and Eve, giving them power to be fruitful and rule.
Blessing became part of humanity’s spiritual DNA.
Through Abraham and ultimately Jesus Christ, this blessing became the birthright of all believers (Galatians 3:16, 29).
5. How Blessing Is Transferred
Invocation – Spoken words or the laying on of hands (as Jesus and the apostles did).
Impartation – Through association and connection (as Laban was blessed by Jacob).
Inheritance – Through Christ, every believer carries the Abrahamic blessing as a covenant right.
6. Placing a Demand on the Blessing
Many Christians carry the blessing but don’t use it.
Like David before Goliath, believers should call on the blessing with confidence, not rely on their own strength.
Jesus, feeding the 5,000, didn’t ask for a blessing — He said a blessing. He released what He already carried.
→ Likewise, believers should speak blessings, not merely ask for them.
7. Practical Application
Speak blessings daily over your mind, family, work, and relationships.
Command your day instead of reacting to it.
When you say “God bless you,” remember the weight of those words — you are releasing divine favor.
8. Final Challenge
Stop asking for what you already possess.
You are a carrier of God’s blessing — speak it, release it, and let it work in every situation of your life.
