In "The Frog Prince," the princess does not kiss the frog but throws him violently against a wall. These stories were intended as cultural artifacts, not bedtime reading.

Following criticism that the tales were not appropriate for a family audience, Wilhelm Grimm began to heavily edit subsequent editions. He took on the primary role of refining the collection, a process that fundamentally reshaped the stories. Sexual references, such as Rapunzel's pregnancy before marriage, were removed. The violence was often heightened but made more righteous, with villains receiving more elaborate and cruel punishments. Crucially, wicked mothers were frequently rewritten as evil stepmothers, as seen in "Snow White" and "Hansel and Gretel," to preserve the sacred ideal of motherhood. Wilhelm also polished the prose, transforming the direct, unadorned language of the oral tradition into the more lyrical, archetypal fairytale style we recognize today.

Through seven editions published between 1812 and 1857, the tales evolved from a work of linguistic and cultural preservation into a cornerstone of children's literature. While the Grimms' initial goal was to save a piece of German heritage, their edited collection ironically established a global template for the modern fairy tale. Their work was translated into countless languages, and its sanitized versions, further popularized by adaptations from companies like Disney, became a permanent fixture in the collective imagination of the world.
