I still remember the exact second my life split in two.
Not the day I got the job. Not the day I moved to the city. The second I heard two words whispered in a quiet room — and nothing after that was ever the same.
But I'm getting ahead of myself.
Let me take you back to the beginning.
I had been working at Weston & Cross Capital for about eight months when I first ended up alone in a room with Claire. Eight months of early mornings, late nights, and spreadsheets that blurred into each other by Thursday. Eight months of being the guy no one really noticed — which, honestly, was fine by me. I liked being invisible. Invisible meant I could work without interruption. Invisible meant I could stay late without anyone asking questions. And I stayed late a lot.
The office was on the thirty-first floor of a glass building downtown. On clear days, you could see the river from the east windows. On bad days — the kind of gray, heavy days where the clouds sat right on top of the city — the building felt like it was floating in nothing. I liked those days too. There was something about the quiet of a storm-gray afternoon that made the numbers easier to focus on.
I was an analyst. Junior level. The kind of job where you do most of the work and see very little of the credit. I had learned early on not to expect recognition. You put your head down, you do the job well, and you hope someone important notices before you burn out completely. That was my plan. Not exciting. But it was mine.
Claire Weston, though — she was a different species entirely.
I had seen her maybe four times in my first eight months. Once in the elevator, where she didn't look up from her phone. Once in a full-company meeting, where she stood at the front of the room and spoke without notes for forty minutes and held every single person's attention without even trying. Once through the glass wall of the conference room on the thirty-third floor, where she was clearly winning an argument no one else in the room looked happy about. And once — just once — in the hallway outside the kitchen, where she was standing completely still with a coffee cup in both hands, staring at the wall like it owed her something.
