It was a Wednesday morning, and I was already running late. I had spilled coffee on my shirt, missed the earlier bus, and walked into Westfield University's Human Biology lecture hall with exactly forty-three seconds to spare before Professor Calloway started talking. I slid into a seat in the third row, dropped my bag, and told myself today would be fine. It was not fine.
The lecture hall was one of those big, cold rooms with fluorescent lights that buzzed just quietly enough to make you feel slightly uncomfortable for reasons you could not explain. About two hundred students filled the seats, and every single one of them looked more prepared than I felt. I pulled out my notebook and uncapped my pen, and that was when I first really looked at her.
Professor Grace Calloway was not what I expected when I had signed up for Human Biology. I had expected someone older. Someone with reading glasses and a coffee-stained cardigan who spoke in a flat voice about things that were technically important but emotionally invisible. What I got instead was a woman who looked like she was maybe thirty-two, standing at the front of the room with her sleeves rolled up and her posture relaxed, like she had been born knowing exactly where she belonged. She wrote three words on the board without introducing herself. Without saying good morning. Without even turning around first.
