At the airport waiting for the plane to arrive, a row of classic taxi’s and what must be the entire fleet of Bermuda Airport Services Volkswagen transit vans in red and green. Known as the “VW Transporter”, I wish they were still made today.
At the Bermudiana Hotel in Hamilton, having a stroll to Pitts Bay Road, note the green bus parked at the entrance. We then go to Front Street, in front of the Queen of Bermuda docked at Number 1 Shed, who is departing.
Back on Front Street, the police are directing traffic from the Birdcage, then it’s a view from the hotel of the city looking East over Par-la-Ville Park.
Again in Hamilton, we get a look at City Hall and its car park with the cottages that used to surround it, then the view of Trimingham Hill and the Paget shoreline across Hamilton Harbor.
We make it to the old Fire Station; Senate House & Cenotaph and the Horse and Carriages are lined up for hire. So sad that Hamilton got too busy for hire carriages today.
Back on Pitts Bay Road, its a walk past the Bermuda Bakery where much of the Islands commercial bread was baked and its bake shop in front – a personal favorite when I was growing up. The area looks nothing like this today and the bakery site is now a parking foundation waiting for its building.
It's time for a swizzle cruise on the Kitson boat “Priscilla”. Departing from Albouy’s Point we cruise off through the Islands in the great Sound, with a great view of the Paget and Warwick shoreline. A big Feadship Stinkpot is passed while an accordion player entertains, and a flying boat is above. We pass Somerset Bridge before stopping at the public wharf for a walk with Cambridge Beaches across the bay.
Back at the Bermudiana Hotel, another view looking East over Hamilton, which looks vastly different today. Is that a rainbow over the container ship departing?
The mandatory stop at the Aquarium and a walk across the street to Flatts Inlet, we get a good look at Flatts Bridge and its strong current rushing back into Harrington Sound. Next is some “fishing” at Devils Hole and then back on a boat in St. Georges with the bridge to Ordnance Island being left in the distance - the White Horse Tavern has no porch.
Naval tug USS Allegheny (ATA-179) passes, then we get a good look at the rusting shipwreck “The Taifun” on the St. Georges shoreline with its bowsprit intact.
A fish was caught, and I am not sure that Mother is impressed.
Heading West again, we are at the very new Carlton Beach Hotel, when it had only 3 floors and no dome pool in Sinky Bay. A Stop at Gibbs Hill Lighthouse is next to enjoy the fabulous view, including the Naval Operating Base (NOB) with its seaplanes.
Back at the very new Carlton Beach we have a look around the front entrance and its grounds and beaches.
Time for a ferry ride to Hamilton and we get a quick look inside before passing the Hamilton Princess Hotel which is shadowed by a cloud.
Back on Front Street we say hello to a horse across the street from Frith’s and Ingham and Wilkson. A stop at the beach is next (the Reefs Resort) and a pose in front of a surrey taxi before a visit to the dunes of Horseshoe Bay.
Back on the water to Hamilton, it’s a stop onboard a ship with one funnel (Queen of Bermuda?), then it’s a visit to the Castle Harbour Hotel in Tuckers Town before going to the town of St. Georges.
A fun time is had in the cedar stocks (in the town square, where they belong) and a visit to St. Peters Church and its historic graveyard.
A quick view of a military inspection, outside the Bermudiana Hotel staff dormitories on Bermudiana Road.
From Martin: "These men are from the Bermuda Rifles. They are in white No.3 Dress 'Warm Weather Ceremonial', worn with green No.1 Dress Caps and what appear to be '37 Pattern webbing belts (stained black or dark green). Note the black tunic buttons.
In the background you can just catch a glimpse of the band in their curious full dress uniform, which , I think uniquely for a Rifles regiment, included red tunics".
Then its time to fly home on Pan Am, land at New York International Airport and deliver presents!
