Kiewit Offshore Services (KOS) completely overhauled an entire oil rig.
The topside was cut off of the hull and set on the ground while everything was cleaned up or replaced with new parts.
Now is the time to put it all back together.
The topside is slid off the bulkhead an onto a barge. It’s a delicate balance of timing and ballast while the weight of the unit goes from dry land to the water.
Then a crew of tugboats push it under the Heavy Lift Device (HLD) and a custom pair of rigging bars are attached. All 8,825 tons are hoisted up and a crew of tugboats push the hull underneath. Once in place, it’s a matter of teamwork to get the topside down onto the hull in perfect position.
When the two major components are back together after such a long time apart, all that’s left is to put it back against the bulkhead and make final tests and commissioning. This whole project was a giant team effort and nobody got hurt.
