Hugh Miller Glacier is located in the Saint Elias Mountains northwest of Hoonah, Alaska. It was named after Scottish geologist Hugh Miller by John Muir in the late nineteenth century. In these scenes from 1940, explorer Bradford Washburn and a fellow adventurer ski down the snowy slopes and into a campsite on the glacier. These scenes were filmed during an expedition to summit Mt. Bertha by climbers Bradford and Barbara Washburn, Lowell Thomas Jr., Tom Winship, Mal Miller and Miche Feuersinger (B&W/Silent/35mm film).
This film sequence is an excerpt of AAF-9376 from the Bradford Washburn collection held by the Alaska Film Archives, a unit of the Alaska & Polar Regions Department in the Elmer E. Rasmuson Library, University of Alaska Fairbanks.
