Lecture Summary:
Can musical phrases carry legal or philosophical meaning? Within Richard Wagner’s famous tetralogy of Musikdrama, Der Ring des Nibelungen, this certainly appears to have been the intention. A modern myth, complete with gods, giants, heroes, and dragons, the Ring Cycle is also one of the most complex reflections within the Western musical canon on the contemporary State and the failures of law to produce both sustainable order and lasting harmony. This seminar explores that legal-philosophical soundworld, contending that greater attention should be given to ‘Wagnerian Jurisprudence’ as a distinctive approach to understanding the nature of law and its place in our world.
