Session 1 in the Rolfing Series -- BREATHING
The theme of Session 1 is Breathing.
Breathing is extremely important for our well being. On average a human being breathes twenty thousand times each day. This means that your breath is a powerful “postural driver”, i.e. how you breathe shapes your posture. If your breath is shallow, mostly in the abdomen and rarely reaching the upper ribs, this will make it more likely that your posture is hunched over and pinched in around the clavicles
In fact it is a vicious circle: a poor breathing pattern negatively affects your posture and a poor postural habit affects and limits the way you normally breathe. One of the goals of Rolfing is to help you become more aware of your breathing patterns and motivated to breathe in a healthy way that is also good for your posture.
An issue I often see with my clients is that they are not aware of how much movement is possible in their ribs and thoracic area when they breathe. There is in fact significant available movement in the ribs, intercostal muscles and diaphragm in breathing.
In Session 1 of the Rolfing Series we work the connective tissues of the key structures involved in breathing to develop your capacity to breathe into your chest, back and two sides. We also look at the two phases of breath — inspiration, expiration and the pauses between each of these phases.
Other structures are also relevant to breathing, such as your neck, hips and sacrum, and these areas are manipulated more superficially as they will be further treated in later sessions.
O Rolfing é uma terapia que trabalha nos seus tecidos musculares e fasciais em um nível detalhado e profundo.
