In September 2008, A small tropical wave off the coast of Africa transformed into a monstrous hurricane named Ike, slamming and causing devastation to parts of the greater Antilles. After that, it aimed straight for the Texas coastline, striking the upper coast, before causing extensive damage through the inland United States as an extratropical cyclone. The results this time were much different. Despite being a Category 2 hurricane, that “simple” category 2 hurricane would wipe out & cause major devastation to those in his path. Major storm surge ranging from Brazoria County all the way to south-central Louisiana. It was the worst tropical cyclone to strike the state of Texas in over a century, striking Surfside Beach, Galveston, Houston, Crystal Beach, Gilchrist, Sabine Pass, amongst many other communities. How did this happen? Well I’m glad you asked. Today I will be taking a deep dive into this storm, covering the meteorological origins, forecasts, preparations, impacts brought, aftermath and response, and how the areas impacted are doing today. Welcome to Nature’s Fury.
