Born in Germany and trained by prominent local artists and designers, both Baruch and Barli-Joel immigrated to Mandatory Palestine in the early 20th century. Each of them had set up her own design practice and received a wide range of commissions. Baruch and Barli-Joel had prolific careers, their iconic designs establishing the visual identity of the emerging state of Israel. Despite their great contributions, their names remained relatively obscure. This talk is based on Segal Hermoni’s ongoing Ph.D. research into women pioneers in graphic design in Mandatory Palestine and Israel. She will shed a light on Baruch’s and Barli-Joel’s careers and accomplishments and share their work and life experiences as female immigrant designers in a male-dominated design scene.
Yael Segal Hermoni holds a BA in Visual Communication from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem, and an MA in Interdisciplinary Arts from the Tel Aviv University, Israel, where she is also a graduate of the Curatorial and Museum Studies program. In her MA thesis Visual Hebrew - Hebrew Type Design During the First Decade of the State of Israel, Segal Hermoni explored the work of four type designers that contributed to the renewed typographic style of Hebrew letterforms. She is currently a PhD Candidate in the Department of Jewish Art at Bar-Ilan University, where she is researching the work and professional lives of Women Graphic Designers in Mandatory Palestine and Israel between 1920s–1950s.
