Both Attercliffe Road and Brightside were former passenger stations located on the Midland Main Line north of Sheffield, serving the industrial districts of the Don Valley. Attercliffe Road, opened in 1870 by the Midland Railway, served workers in Attercliffe and Burngreave. It had two platforms accessed via an underpass from Leveson Street. Brightside, much older, opened in 1838 with the Sheffield & Rotherham Railway. It had four tracks (two passenger, two freight) and served Brightside and Wincobank.
Both stations experienced steep declines in usage during the late 20th century due to deindustrialisation and the shift toward road transport. Their already limited services were made redundant following the opening of Meadowhall Interchange in 1990, a modern and better-connected hub. As a result, both stations were closed at the end of January 1995. Filmed here is a brief snapshot of the two stations as they were just before closure.
