The modern appearance of Rugby Station began taking shape as early as 2003, marking the start of a substantial redevelopment that would not be fully completed until 2008. The project opened with the removal of the station’s iconic roof, which was replaced by a smaller, more contemporary canopy that stretched over the platforms. From that point onward, the entire station underwent a dramatic redesign, sweeping away the older layout in favour of a streamlined, modern environment built to accommodate the next generation of railway operations.
During this period, many newly-formed rail companies were experiencing what felt like an identity shift of their own. They experimented with updated branding, introducing a wide array of fresh liveries and colours even on their older locomotives. For railway photographers, this era offered an exceptional variety of visual subjects and the day captured in this video at Rugby Station reflects the evolving landscape that was unfolding at that time.
