Talaq-e-Biddat means pronouncing three divorces at one time, either in one sentence or three sentences in a single sitting.
In PLD 2025 Supreme Court 469, the Supreme Court held that even triple talaq pronounced at once does not dissolve marriage immediately.
The husband must still follow the mandatory legal procedure under the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance, 1961, including notice to the Union Council.
The divorce becomes effective only after the 90-day reconciliation period.
Failure to follow this procedure makes the talaq legally ineffective, similar to cases of khula or improper talaq. The judgment reinforces that due process and reconciliation are compulsory, regardless of the form of talaq.
