Dreadful was the day of that oath:
"(...) This swear we all:
death we will deal him ere Day's ending,
woe unto world's end! Our word hear thou,
Eru Allfather! To the everlasting
Darkness doom us if our deed faileth.
On the holy mountain hear in witness
and our vow remember, Manwë and Varda!"
The Annals of Aman, §134 (Morgoth's Ring, p. 112)
And death they will give, death they will receive, and gems that hold the first light of Arda in all its magnificence will be bound to desire and doom.
Because the One Ring was made to be wanted through magic and darkness, but the Silmarils were simply too magnificent not to be desired. Enough gorgeus to make anyone give everything to possess them.
Only a few were able to resist their beauty for something far more unfathomable: love.
DISCLAIMER: Probably the Quenya isn't correct, but I'm no Eldar or, especially, Professor Tolkien. So sorry in advance for any mistake. I did my best.

Lyrics in English (approximately):
Fëanor speaks: behold his fire;
the gathered Silmarils vanish into the dark.
Morgoth has come: "He will not flee from me.
From the star-light I rekindle courage; my heart spurs me on."
Eru listens to the oath, steady and clear;
and upon towering Taniquetil (the oath) finds the bearer of radiance.
The sons of Fëanor rise (to arms); bodies will lie upon the shore.
At Morgoth’s fall, a golden wrath rises.
Who can read the hushed murmur, and read the land?
The will of a singing city (reaches) up to the brightest summit.
Friends set out; broken leaves have spoken.
The oath of the distant land: the Silmarils will be found!
Swear! Rejoice!
So that Arda, refuge of life, may remain defended.
Manwë, Varda, set there (upon the oath) your light (bear witness);
may what now shall be our imperishable gift!
Manwë, Varda, set there (upon the oath) your light (bear witness);
may what now shall be our imperishable gift!
Silmarils, await our children (creations);
in the night light let praise arise, exult!
Swear! Rejoice!

Manwë, Varda, set there (upon the oath) your light (bear witness);
