This is the second in a idea I derived from Bruckner (who wrote 2 for the trombone), for 3 Alto Clarinets in Eb. Works for the alto are scarce and solo work is almost non-existent. As a player of the alto, I longed for something to challenge players and inspire others to perhaps learn this beautiful instrument.
The tone color is a little on the tough side with 3 of the same instrument. I tried to balance that by having each player dabble a little in each range of the instrument. The beautiful and resonating Chalumeau register, the often problematic Clarion/middle (or "throat") register and the soaring high Altissimo register.
I may yet write a piece for clarinet choir, the alto is among my favorite instruments, we go back to 1984 when I first started playing the alto in middle school band. I always felt like it never really got a fair shake and chance, being a middle (it's really more of a 'tenor' voice than an alto as the name implies) voice which is often lost and supporting middle harmonic lines rather than roots and melodies. Here the altos are unimpeded by the preponderance of other musical voices and the listener can enjoy the instrument in all it's glory.
