Kenya is urbanizing rapidly, with around half of the population expected to live in cities by 2050.
However, an increasing number of Kenya's poor now live in cities, and the proportion of the urban population living in poverty has not changed over the past decades (World Bank, 2018). For many people living in informal settlements, access to energy for cooking is a constant challenge with significant implications for quality of life and health.
Amollo Ambole, of the University of Nairobi, Kenya, tells us how her research in Kenya, Uganda and South Africa is helping to understand the energy problem in informal settlements and how it relates to housing, health and gender issues.
