Municipal elections in Montenegro are pitting supporters of the Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic against the small republic's pro-Western leader, President Miko Djukanovic.

Results of Sunday's ballots in Podgorica and the coastal resort of Herzej Novi will reflect on the strength of the current leader because a third of the republic's six-hundred-thousand inhabitants live in the two cities.

Under the leadership of Djukanovic - a bitter Milosevic opponent - Montenegro has experienced virtual independence from Yugoslavia over the past two years.

0003 The SNP party in Montenegro supports a united Yugoslavia with Serbia as an ally and Slobodan Milosevic at the helm.

0012 The party invested in a glamorous advertising campaign promoting its leader, Yugoslav Prime Minister Momir Bulatovic.

0019 The SNP claims to have the firm support of 65 percent of the population.

0023 And Bulatovic brought supporters a warm greeting from President Milosevic....and expressed confidence his party would be victorious in the municipal elections.

0035 But supporters of the pro-reform leadership are also confident of victory - and like their leader, President Milo Djukanovic, they want little involvement with Milosevic and Serbia.

0044 Thousands gathered to support President Djukanovic who has led the republic to virtual independence from Yugoslavia over the past two years. At a rally, he urged his people to vote for the right person, to vote for freedom and to vote for good economic prospects.
