A nice long lane close to the village of East Garston just to the north of Hungerford in West Berkshire, but one with a sting in its tail!
It starts as a firm metalled track, an Unclassified County Road but after only 240 metres becomes the Byway, which continues for nearly 4 kilometres (2.5 miles). After passing through a farm it becomes a looser, stony twin track with no particular problems. It was an exceptionally dry day when I rode this so I don't expect it to be as easy if wet as there are a few patches where soil has encoroached and looks like it gets very muddy after rain. At a small wood the map indicates that the byway goes through the wood but I could see no evidence of this but the farm track continues round the wood for a very short detour. It's now that things get more difficult, evidence of more mud on the track surface and then when the route of the byway is rejoined, it's a rut fest, with progressively deeper ruts. On this day it was possible to stay on the centre ridge most of the time but not guaranteed in the wet. It continues like this for the whole of the last 1.25 kilometres to the end of the lane. A Difficult one to grade as it starts as definitely a green but gets harder, on this occasion it never got much harder so definitely going to be an Amber in wet conditions, possibly even Red for a big bike and/or inexperienced rider.
