Welcome back to ‘the bible says what’. Today I will summarize Proverbs chapter 26, where Solomon gave proverbs about the fool, the lazy man, and the liar. This chapter of Solomon’s proverbs was added during the reign of King Hezekiah.
Solomon wrote: honor is not fitting for a fool. It is like snow in the summer or rain at harvest time. Fools deserve beatings. Don’t speak to a fool, because proverbs in a fool's mouth is like the useless legs of a lame person. They are like a thorn bush in the hand of a drunkard. Whoever hires a fool for anything would be better off cutting off his own feet or drinking a vial of poison. Fools repeat their folly like a dog returns to its own vomit. Fools involve themselves in other people’s quarrels. They are like someone who grabs a stray dog by the ears and gets bitten.
Solomon continued: lazy people come up with any excuse to avoid work. They come up with ridiculous ideas like ‘there is a lion in the road and I’ll get killed if I go to work today’. But the lazy person thinks he is more wise than seven men who speak quietly. Quarrels and fights will die down when people stop gossiping. The lying man is your enemy. He hates you enough to lie to you. They disguise themselves with their lips, but they will be found out and exposed in the end. Whoever lays a trap for someone else will fall into it themselves. And, whoever deceives someone and says ‘i was only joking’ after they are found out is the same kind of person who would randomly shoot into a crowded room.
The most important verses in this chapter are Proverbs 26:27 and 28 which state, ‘Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him. A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin..’
The thing I think the Lord wants us to understand after reading this chapter is that He wants people to determine who is a fool and to treat them as such. God does not want anyone to be lazy or a gossip. And God wants people to be honest with each other and avoid lying.
Everyone thinks they are a wise person, but are you really? If you are not, you can be today. Repent for your sin and turn to Jesus for salvation. Jesus humbled himself and died on a cross to pay for your sin, and the Father raised Jesus from the dead. God said if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and if you believe in your heart that the Father raised Jesus from the dead, you would be saved. Why don’t you do that right now?
