Welcome back to ‘the bible says what’. Today I will summarize Proverbs chapter 27, which contains 22 of Solomon’s proverbs. I will give you a sample of what is in this chapter because these proverbs cover numerous topics. Hopefully you will be able to read them all someday soon.
Solomon wrote: do not boast about tomorrow. You don’t even know what is going to happen later on today. Do not praise yourself, ever. Let other people praise you. Truthful rebuke is better than secret love. Wounds from a friend can be trusted. But kisses and kind words from an enemy cannot. Someone who ate too much will hate even the thought of honey. But a hungry man will enjoy any bitter plant. Better a neighbor who is nearby than a relative who is far away.
Solomon continued, the prudent see danger and take refuge. The simpleton does not see it and is destroyed. If someone blesses their neighbor too early in the morning, it will be taken as a curse. A quarrelsome wife is like a constant dripping that cannot be stopped. Like iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another man when they discuss important things. The person who protects their master will be honored. A mirror reflects a man’s face. In the same way, a person’s life and speech reflect what is inside of that person’s heart.
Solomon taught: death, destruction, and a man’s lustful eyes are never satisfied. People are tested by the praise they receive. Will they be proud, or will they be humble? Even though you grind a fool up into a bloody mess, you will never remove their stupidity. It is part of them. Be sure you know the condition of your flocks and herds. Riches never last, and it will take constant attention to ensure it remains. If you do your necessary work, you will have enough.
The most important verses in this chapter are Proverbs 27:1 and 2 which state, ‘Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth. Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips..’
The thing I think the Lord wants us to understand after reading this chapter is that people do not know how long they have to live, so they should not be proud about the future. He wants people to be courteous to others. He wants people to watch for danger and take refuge if they see it. He wants us to know that our life and speech reflect who we really are. When we get knocked over, does fresh water or bitter water spill out? And, God wants us to pay close attention to the business He has set before us.
Do you boast about tomorrow? Don’t you realize today could be your last day in this world? Why don’t you repent for your sin and turn to Jesus for salvation. Jesus humbled himself and died on a cross to pay for your sin, and the Father raised Jesus from the dead. God said if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and if you believe in your heart that the Father raised Jesus from the dead, you would be saved. Why don’t you do that right now?
