If your nervous system feels like it won’t calm down after narcissistic abuse, it’s not “just anxiety.” Chronic stress changes the brain and body. When someone lives under long-term emotional neglect, ongoing conflict, betrayal, or narcissistic abuse, the amygdala (the brain’s threat detector) stays switched on. Over time, this constant activation shifts from psychological stress into neurological and physiological symptoms. Panic attacks, chest pain, IBS, migraines, jaw tension, shoulder pain, extreme fatigue, and even diagnoses like Somatic Symptom Disorder (SSD) or Illness Anxiety Disorder (IAD) can develop .
Panic attacks are not weakness. They are a misfiring survival response. The body obeys the brain’s false alarm. When the amygdala becomes hyper-reactive, it interprets normal body sensations as danger, triggering adrenaline, cortisol, muscle tension, and that terrifying feedback loop of panic. Logic can’t override it because the amygdala doesn’t respond to logic — it responds to felt safety.
In this video, I explain how chronic stress from narcissistic abuse becomes physical, why doctors may say “you’re fine” while your body feels anything but, and how to begin restoring safety through somatic nervous system regulation. Healing starts by working with the body, not fighting it. Slow, repetitive safety practices — like gentle rhythmic touch — retrain the nervous system and help the brain relearn that the threat is over.
