Making coasters, rugs, and even baskets out of scrap fabric is super easy. It's a great way to do zero-waste quilting as well! In this video, I'll show you how to make beautiful things out of fabric that would usually end up in the trash when you're sewing.
To make a rag rug project, you'll need cotton clothesline rope or piping cord. I like the 1/4" thickness. Here's a brand of clothesline I've used before: https://amzn.to/4lvT5wr or you can also use piping cord like this: https://amzn.to/3RhDjYc (affiliate links). Piping cord tends to be more expensive, and personally I find clothesline rope a little easier to work with anyway.
You'll also want quilting clips like these to hold your fabric: https://amzn.to/42ep6BK. Because the project is quite thick, I recommend using a denim sewing needle instead of an all-purpose one: https://amzn.to/4ikr7B7 (affiliate links)
All you do is wrap the fabric around the cord, then coil it clockwise and sew the two sides of the rope together with a zig zag stitch. It's super easy once you get the hang of it.
You can use this concept to make coasters, rugs, or anything else with a coil shape.
