Today I’m changing the oil in my compressor. This is a direct-drive vertical compressor, and the most critical step is using the correct oil. Compressors use several viscosity grades, generally from SAE 32 up to SAE 100 (roughly 10W–30W), and the oil must be non-detergent—you can’t use regular motor oil because detergents will wash internal surfaces and shorten the compressor’s life.
Direct-drive compressors run at much higher RPM, so using the wrong oil can cause rapid wear or even failure. My unit requires 30W / SAE 100 non-detergent compressor oil, but surprisingly, this type wasn’t available at Home Depot. Be careful when buying “juscompressor oil”—check the spec.
Overall, the oil change is quick and easy. In my case, the only real effort was tilting the compressor to drain everything out. Make sure to check the oil level carefully during filling and again after a test run.
